What Makes Paint Color Lighter?

Paint colors are lightened when a white base is added. You can lighten the color of your paint by stirring in small amounts of white paint. Before you begin, understand the proper way to accomplish your goal, or you could ruin your paint.
  • Procedure

    • You can lighten your paint by adding small amounts of white paint. The key to this strategy is adequate stirring. You must stir the two paints together for a minimum of five minutes, or you could end up with streaking.

    Measurements

    • If you add large quantities of white paint, you may lighten your paint too much. Always add only a one-half ounce of white paint at a time. Be sure to evaluate your results before you add more.

    Sheen

    • Not all paints are compatible. Do not mix latex paint with oil-based paint, or you will ruin both paints. Likewise, do not mix satin, flat and gloss paint sheens, as this will lead to streaking.
