What Time of Year Do I Trim My Lemon Tree?

Lemon trees are very cold sensitive, growing best in well-drained soil in a south or southeastern area with protection from the wind. Proper care and maintenance, including pruning, allows trees to develop to their full potential, with the highest possible level of fruit production.
  • Annual Pruning

    • Annual pruning may be unnecessary if the tree is developing an ideal shape without trimming, according to Texas A&M. However, lemon trees sometimes grow sprouts above the canopy of the tree that bear fruit only on the ends of these tall branches, often resulting in the branches breaking under the weight of the fruit in windy conditions. Cold damaged branches must also be pruned from the lemon tree every year, as needed.

    Best Pruning Time

    • Late winter or early spring are the best times for trimming a lemon tree. This provides adequate time for newly exposed branches in the canopy to develop new cover before high temperatures arrive. Additionally, pruning prior to flowering minimizes lost fruit production.

    Worst Pruning Time

    • Avoid pruning lemon trees during the hottest part of the year, normally about May to October. Exposed areas may suffer from sun damage or develop bark rot.
