When Do Hostas Bloom?

Hostas have been extensively cultivated and range in size from 8 inches to 8 feet in diameter. Leaves are yellow, gold, blue, green, white or a variegated combination of these colors. Hostas bloom at different times, dependent on the cultivar.
  • Features

    • Hostas are perennials and mature in four to eight years, depending on their size and rate of growth. Hosta flowers grow on spikes with newer cultivars having 50 to 75 blossoms on each flowerscape. They range in color from white to purple, and some of the varieties are fragrant.

    Time Frame

    • Hostas bloom for two to three weeks every year. Most species bloom during the warm summer months of July and August. Some cultivars will blossom earlier or later in the growing season. Your hosta may flower as early as June or as late as October.

    Warning

    • Hostas need five to six hours of sunshine every day to produce fragrant flowers. The leaves will burn in the hot summer sun, especially those that are variegated or in darker colors. Plant your hostas in the part of the garden that receives afternoon shade.

    Fun Fact

    • Although hostas produce seeds every year, they do not grow true from seed. People propagate hostas by dividing them.
