When to Prepare Hard Soil for Vegetable Gardening?

Hard clay soil is common in many areas and is not conducive to growing vegetables. Most types of vegetables thrive in soil that is loose and well draining and that does not remain soggy. Amendments can make all the difference.
  • Amending Hard Soil in Winter

    • You can get a head start on your summer growing season by starting to improve your hard soil in winter, if you can work the soil at that time. Make several applications of organic compost and other organic materials during winter by digging them at least 8 inches into your soil.

    Amending Hard Soil in Spring

    • If your soil freezes during winter, wait until you can work it in early spring. Also, heavy, wet soil is difficult to work, so you might want to wait until it dries out a bit. However, completely dry clay soil can resemble cement, so watch for a window of opportunity when the soil is neither too wet nor too dry.

    Amendments for Hard Soil

    • Using your own homemade compost is a good way to recycle in your home. You can also purchase locally occurring materials such as redwood compost, mushroom compost or even macadamia nut compost, if you live in Hawaii. You can also add coarse builders' sand; purchased, good quality topsoil; purchased compost and animal manures and any other organic materials you have available.
