Windows XP SP2 Shutdown Problems

Various hardware and software issues can cause a Microsoft Windows XP SP2 computer to fail to properly shut down. These problems often cause the shutdown process to freeze, resulting in the computer staying switched on, but unresponsive.
  • Causes

    • Shutdown problems are usually caused by a hardware device driver or software program failing to properly close, leaving the operating system waiting for this outcome before proceeding with the shutdown.

If the problem is new and you recently added some hardware or software, this may be the cause. You can confirm this by removing the hardware or software and seeing if the problem remains.

    Resolution

    • Microsoft suggests a range of fixes for this common problem. Simple things to try include using the built-in System Restore function to restore the computer to an earlier point in time, before the problem started to occur, or booting the machine in the "last known good configuration" mode, accessed by pressing "F8" during startup.

Other more advanced fixes include selectively stopping problem programs loading when you boot the computer and performing a repair installation of Windows XP.

    Advice

    • It is best to attempt simple troubleshooting steps first. If the problem remains, Microsoft provides detailed online instructions for more advanced fixes. Depending on your level of technical knowledge, you may prefer a PC technician to attempt the more complex procedures.
