Avoid the winter blues and celebrate the beauty of the chilly season. Winter activities can supplement learning, build teamwork and add some fun to those long, cold days at school. Organize events indoors for those extreme chilly days and outdoors to take full advantage of fresh snow. Celebrate the season with activities sure to entertain students from kindergarten through eighth grade.

    Snowman-Building Contest

    • Enjoy a little lively competition among class members or grades within the school. Create teams and designate a space in the schoolyard for building. Each team has a limited amount of time, based on the amount of snow and melting level, to create a prize-winning snowman. Offer prizes not only for the best overall, but for the most creative and the best teamwork. This activity will keep students busy and create a nice scenery on the school grounds.

    Carnival

    • Teach students about French culture and host a Carnaval de Bonhomme. Based on the Carnaval de Quebec, the spectacular winter festival in French Canada. Bonhomme, literally meaning "good man" in french is a snowman and ambassador of the festival. Include a court of Carnaval with a duke and duchess for each grade, voted by the students at each level. Rent a cotton candy machine and set up games such as pin-the-tail on Bonhomme and a coloring contest. Rent a Bonhomme suit for someone to wear and meet all the children during the festival.

    Snow Day

    • Organize a Friday outdoors for all students. Kindergarten through third-grade students can spend the morning outside and grades four through eight can spend the afternoon to avoid a packed schoolyard. Encourage students to make snow angels, create snow forts and participate in relays and races. Serve hot chocolate with tons of marshmallows in the cafeteria to warm up the students after a chilly day in the snow.
