How to Attach a Mailbox

Mailboxes can be attached to a wooden post or to a brick wall by your front door. Home-improvement stores carry pre-fabricated posts and wall-mounting kits to assist you in attaching or mounting your mailbox properly.
  • How to Attach a Mailbox to a Post

    • 1

Remove your old mailbox. Be careful not to strip the screw holes because you may need to use them again. Skip this step if you are using a new post.

    • 2

Check to see if your old bracket fits on your new mailbox or new post. If not, you need to attach a new bracket that matches your new mailbox.

    • 3

Place the bracket on the mailbox post. Check the bracket with a level and mark new screw holes with chalk, if needed. Attach the bracket by drilling screws into the post.

    • 4

Fasten your new mailbox to the bracket with a pair of pliers and the supplied nuts and bolts.

    • 5

Use carpenter's wood putty to fill in any old screw holes in the post.

How to Attach a Mailbox on a Brick Wall

    • 1

Determine the location of your mailbox on the brick wall. Measure the diameter of the anchor hole on the back of your mailbox. Ask a friend to help you hold the mailbox while you mark the anchor holes on the brick with chalk.

    • 2

Drill a hole in the brick wall for each masonry anchor. Insert the anchor and make sure it's flush with the wall.

    • 3

Place the mailbox on the anchors. Double check that the mounting holes of the mailbox are tightly mounted onto the anchors.

    • 4

Drill in matching screws through the mailbox mounting holes and the anchors. Masonry anchors are designed to have matching screws inserted into them.
