Large Rims & Gas Mileage

Fancy rims demand high sums of money to begin with, but the costs are greater than the upfront payment. Large, heavy rims reduce gas mileage and require more trips to the pump.
  • Weight

    • Gas moves cars forward, but heavier cars use greater quantities of gas. Adding large rims to a car increases he vehicle's total weight, thus requiring more fuel.

    Wheel Size

    • Larger rims will also require larger tires, which not only add weight to the vehicle but absorb more resistance from the road. The resistance requires an even greater amount of energy to compensate.

    Lighter Wheels

    • While larger rims decrease gas mileage, smaller rims have the opposite effect. Provided they are compatible with the vehicle, rims made from lighter materials help save money on gas.
