The problem is that the shutters also attract dirt and dust, which changes the look of the blinds and makes them appear darker than they actually are. Cleaning the plantation shutters in the right way will prevent spotting and streaking.

  Spray the vinyl shutters with a garden hose, thoroughly saturating all areas. The key to getting rid of spots and streaks is to apply the water before the soap.

  Combine 1 tsp. of dish soap with 1 qt. of water in a plastic bucket. Dip your sponge in the bucket and apply the soapy mixture to the shutters. Gently work the soap into all of the grooves of the shutters.

  Use the scrub brush to clean any harsh stains on the vinyl. Add more of the soap mixture to the shutters and scrub them with the brush until the stain comes off.

  Rinse the shutters completely with the garden hose. Keep applying water until it runs clear and no more soap bubbles appear.

  Pat the shutters dry with towels or old rags. This keeps water from collecting on the shutters and causing streaking and spots.
