How to Unlock a Samsung GSM Phone

GSM stands for global system for mobile communications. It is the most commonly used technology with cellular phones. If you purchased your Samsung GSM phone from a mobile phone network then it may have come locked to that company. This means that you won't be able to use it with a subscriber identity module (SIM) from a different company. This can inconvenient if you travel out side of the country since you will end up paying roaming fees. However, you can unlock your Samsung phone if you have the right code.

  Obtain the international mobile equipment identification number (IMEI) for your Samsung GSM phone. This is a unique serial number to your phone that can be obtained by dialing *#06# into your phone. The 15-digit code will appear on your screen. Write it down and save it for later as you will need it to create your code.

  Choose a website that sells unlock codes for the Samsung GSM phone. As of 2010 a single code will cost you between $15 and $35.

  Enter your IMEI number in the website that you have chosen to purchase your codes from. Select Samsung as the make of your phone and choose the model. Choose your service provider and the country. Enter your credit card or Paypal information and provide a valid email address.

  Get the code from your email in one or two days and write it down exactly as you see it.

  Turn the power off on your Samsung phone and pop the battery out. Remove the white plastic SIM card and insert the new one from a different network. These can be purchased at any mobile phone store. Turn the phone back on. A message will appear on your screen that says "Enter Subsidy Code."

  Type in the unlock code to your phone and press "OK." Wait for the phone to restart. The name of the new network will appear at the top of the screen. Your Samsung GSM phone is now unlocked.
