How to Match Siding & Roof Colors

It's absolutely critical that when you're picking siding and a roof for your home, the colors you choose should match each other, because this color scheme will affect the value of your home. However, it's also important to choose a scheme that you find attractive and personally representative of your tastes. For this reason, you should spend a lot of time considering your choices before you make a final decision.

You should choose a color that others will find attractive and tasteful. For this reason, conservative colors such as white, gray, brown, beige, gold, sage or light blue are commonly used. If you are keeping your old siding and simply wish to match your old siding to your new roof, you can skip this step.

  Determine if your siding is a warm color or a cool color. Warm colors are those colors that correspond to red, yellow or orange on the color wheel. Cool colors include green, blue and purple. Therefore, most colors such as gold, beige and brown are warm colors, while common siding colors such as sage and sky blue are cool colors. Neutrals include white and gray.

  Choose a roof that will match the siding. Warm colors will generally look better with brown-tinted or warm-tinted roof colors. Cool colors and neutrals will generally look better with cool-tinted or gray roof tiles. For example, a dark-brown roof tile will match well with a middle-value brown siding, while a sage-colored home will match up with a gray-green roof tile. Note that a gray roof tile is a common fit-all roof color that will generally match just about any siding. Although there may be a better, more interesting roof color you could choose for your home, it's difficult to go truly wrong with gray. In addition, homes that have a neutral siding (white or gray) will look best with a neutral-colored roof tile.
