How to Remove the Back Seat in a 2002 Ford Mustang

The Mustang was conceived in the 1960s as a sporty car that could be made and sold inexpensively. The Mustang was completely redesigned in 1999, and the 2002 model had very few changes. Still available was either V-6 or V-8 power, standard or automatic transmissions and the powerful GT model. Removal of excess weight in a Mustang can improve its performance, and that's exactly what some owners do when they install a rear seat delete kit. Whether you are installing one of these kits or your rear seat needs to be reupholstered, you'll need to remove the seat first.

Slide the front seats towards the front of the car then fold the front seat backs forward.

Locate the two rear seat cushion release buttons mounted in between the bottom of the seat cushion and the carpet. Depress both buttons and pull the front of the seat cushion upwards. Pull the cushion towards the front of the car then lift it upwards. Remove the cushion from the passenger compartment.

Remove the white plastic clips that held the seat cushion in place with a 5/16-inch socket and ratchet wrench if desired. Skip this step if you will be installing the seat back into the car in the near future.

Unscrew the three bolts holding the rear seat headrest into place with a 1/4-inch socket and ratchet. Lift the headrest straight up from the rear seat back and remove it from the passenger compartment.

Locate the seat back retaining bolts that are visible on each side of the lower part of the seat back. Remove the bolts with a 10 mm socket and ratchet. Push the seat back release buttons and fold the seat back forward to reveal the remaining seat back bolts near the top of the seat back frame. Remove these bolts with the 10 mm socket and ratchet.

Lift the seat back and its framework out of the passenger compartment with the help of an assistant. Use care as the piece is heavy and could scratch and damage other interior trim parts.
