AC Adapter Replacement Tips

AC adapters are common attachments for portable computers and other devices. They are designed to convert the standard AC electrical current from wall outlets into a form that the computer can use more easily. Adapters are generally necessary for portable electronics and most come with standard versions. However, if your device is old you may want to consider replacing your adapter with an updated model that can save you battery life and delay the cost of replacing the battery itself.

    Wait for Several Years

    • Your adapter will work well when you first buy it. AC adapters take several years to diminish in quality, so if you have had your adapter less than three years then consider keeping it for a while longer. If you are having problems look for another cause, like your battery itself. There is always a chance that either your adapter or battery has malfunctioned, but long term problems take years to develop.

    Match Manufacturers

    • This is an important step. Manufacturers make products designed to work with their specific product lines. Not only will an off-brand adapter not charge your battery as well, it may cause damage, especially if you do not match voltage requirements. Look up the specifications for your device and find out what adapter you need to buy. Most adapters have the relevant information printed on them.

    Look for Greater Capacity

    • If you are shopping for a new adapter in the right product line, then you may want to expand your capacity. An adapter with a larger capacity can charge a battery more quickly and efficiently, leading to overall energy gains. Do not go overboard, though -- stick with the options offered for your model so you do not cause damage.

    Look for a Versatile Adapter

    • For smaller devices, you may have a choice of adapters with multiple settings. These adapters allow you to choose between several different voltage or device options, making it ideal if you want to use it for multiple devices. Some of these adapters need to be switched manually, while others automatically adjust their current based on the needs of the battery.
