How to Remodel a Back Porch

If you spend hours on your back porch relaxing or watching nature, consider remodeling it. Remodeling your back porch allows you create your own personal oasis. When remodeling your back porch, take the size of the porch into account. Purchasing large outdoor furniture such as a bench, coffee table and end tables may consume the entire space of your porch. This may create a cluttered feeling, instead of a relaxing one. You don't need special skills or tools to successfully remodel your back porch, creating a space you may wish to enjoy a beverage or read a book on a sunny afternoon.

Remove all items from the back porch and sweep the floor. This creates a clean working surface and declutters the space in advance of remodeling.

Paint the floor with exterior paint. When you're choosing colors for the paint, decide whether you want a solid color or a design on the floor--for example stripes. Light colored paint creates an illusion of a larger area.

Purchase outdoor furniture for sitting, eating and reading. When you select the furniture, remember that traditional indoor furniture cannot withstand the outdoor elements.

Buy furniture that goes with the size of your back porch. For example, a small back porch will look cluttered with large furniture; select a small rocking chair and a small end table instead.
