Broom Sage Plant

The broomsage is a perennial shrub found in the southwestern portion of the United States. It is a member of the Asteraceae family, which also includes daisies and sunflowers.
  • Types

    • There are three types of broomsage found in the United States. Burgess' broomsage (Lepidospartum burgessii) is limited to Texas and Arizona, Nevada broomsage (Lepidospartum latisquamum) is found in Nevada, Utah and California while California broomsage (Lepidospartum squamatum) is found in Nevada and California.

    Identification

    • Broomsage grows to about 3 feet tall, according to New Mexico Rare Plants. Its branches are covered with silvery hairs. It blooms in small yellow flowers from June to October, with peak blooming from late July to September.

    Geography

    • Broomsage prefers to grow in desert-type regions. According to Calflora, it is often found near and around Joshua tree woodland, chaparral and creosote bush scrub.
