Code of Ethics for the American Dietetic Association

The American Dietetic Association and its credentialing agency, the Commission on Dietetic Registration, state that it is in the best interest of the public and the profession to have a code of ethics in place. This code is to act as a guide for professional dietetics practitioners, such as registered dietitians or registered dietetic technicians.
  • Fundamental Principles

    • The ADA code establishes two basic principles: dietetics practitioners conduct themselves with honesty, integrity, and fairness and to promote only the highest standards of professional practice in themselves and in colleagues.

    Responsibilities to the Public

    • The ADA places exacting ethical demands on its members in dealing with the public and clients. Examples of these demands include: to consider the health and welfare of society, to employ honest communication, to respect the unique needs of every individual and to protect the confidentiality of clients.

    Responsibilities to the Profession

    • The ADA asserts that the members have obligations to their profession, as well as the public, which include: to use only evidence-based and substantiated principles, to avoid conflicts of interest and to make an accurate presentation of qualifications and credentials.
