Electrical Cord Hazards in the Workplace

      Electrical cords are common in factories and workshops. They range from small, simple cords that connect minor appliances to wall outlets to large extension cords that can extend many feet to power larger types of equipment. Any source of electricity in the workplace can be a danger to those working around it, and electrical cords are no exception. Those who frequently work with electrical cords should be careful to take the necessary precautions.

    Electrocution

    • Electrocution is one of the most present dangers with cords. In general, electricity and water should not mix. This means that workers should take steps to keep all electrical cords away from both water sources and steam sources. This also means that cords cannot wrap around pipes that carry water or steam in case leaks develop. Workers should take care plugging and unplugging all electrical appliances to avoid shock.

    Fires

    • Electricity can generate a lot of heat, enough to start fires, especially if there are flammable substances nearby. Electrical cords are well-insulated to keep them protected from outside elements, including water, but over time the insulation can wear away and crack. If the wires are exposed to the air, they can generate enough heat to be dangerous.

    Tripping

    • Electrical cords stretched out over long distances pose a tripping hazard, which not only endangers workers but also makes it easier to damage the appliances. All electrical cords should be bolted to walls or run along the edge of floors so they are kept out of the way.

    Overloads

    • If too many electrical cords are connected to a single outlet source, or if the cord malfunctions due to inconsistencies in current and standards, then the resulting overload can damage systems and present both a fire and shock hazard. Companies should follow electrical appliance protocol and use power diverters as needed.
