Flange Height for Toilet Installation

The link between the drain pipe and the toilet is provided by the flange. If the flange is not installed properly, the toilet will not sit evenly on the floor, which can result in numerous issues.
  • Proper Flange Height

    • For the flange to be set at the appropriate height so the toilet can be properly installed on it, the flange ring, or collar, should be mounted directly on top of the finished floor. This will put the top of the flange collar approximately 1/2 inch above the finished floor. The bottom of the flange collar will be directly against the finished floor. The flange is secured to the floor with screws.

    Improper Height Dangers

    • If the flange is installed at an improper height, the toilet will not seat securely on top of it. As a result, the toilet will rock. The wax seal beneath the toilet will also likely be compromised.

    Additional Flange Consideration

    • In addition to mounting the flange properly on top of the finished floor, make certain the slots in the flange are lined up parallel with the wall behind the flange. The flange bolts will be inserted into the slots, anchoring the toilet in the right position.
