Heaters That Run on Used Motor Oil

    • Heating costs have risen dramatically in the United States along with the cost of oil. Some homeowners are experimenting with alternative ways of heating their homes by recycling used oil products, such as waste vegetable oil or used motor oil. The availability of relatively inexpensive--or even free--oil for heating is an attractive way to affordably heat large spaces, such as homes or businesses. Although waste oil heaters can be installed in a typical home, they are commonly marketed toward businesses that are responsible for handling and disposing of waste motor oil, such as garages, fleet mechanic shops and automobile dealerships.

    Inov8 F-125

    • The Inov8 F-125 is a waste oil heater with a 125,000 Btu output, which can heat a large industrial building. Compared to other waste oil heaters, the Inov8 F-125 has been designed and manufactured with high efficiency standards, having obtained an Energy Star rating. Inov8 has been manufacturing waste oil heaters since 1992 and is one of the older names for such products in the industry. The heater uses approximately 0.84 gallons of waste oil per heater. Waste oil heaters do, however, require more maintenance due to the contaminants often found in waste oil. As a result, Inov8 has also designed their heaters so that most, if not all, users can easily do their own maintenance through using the manual included with the heater. At an additional cost, Inov8 also has a "Perpetual Warranty" which covers the heating module that can be switched out on a regular basis. The heater comes with a 120-volt wall thermostat, oil filter, check valve, barometric damper, hanging brackets and a fuel pick-up assembly. The heater also requires a supply of compressed air at a rate of 2.0 cfm/30 PSI.

    Columbia LVWO Waste Oil Boiler

    • Columbia manufactures waste oil heaters for commercial businesses, specializing in industrial sites that use a combination of indoor-outdoor applications, such as sheds, barns and auto repair garages. The LVWO Waste Oil Boiler burns through 0.5-1.5 gallons per hour with a maximum Btu range between 60,000 and 168,000 Btu's per hour. The boiler is able to store eight gallons of water. The patented Shenandoah Burner was designed by Columbia for easy maintenance by using a slide-out gun assembly.

    Energy Logic EL-140H

    • The EL-140H is another industrial heater with the capacity to put out 142,000 Btu's per hour, which also equals 41.6 kW per hour. As a result, the EL-140H can heat up to 3,500 square feet easily and efficiently. The heater burns at a rate of 1.0 gallon of used oil per hour. The unit is also manufactured to fit into a small, compact, space measuring 18 inches high by 18 inches in wide. The heater cabinet also includes a blower in addition to the burner. The 250 gallon workbench with a tank also allows for storing large quantities of oil. Other standard features include an integrated air compressor, barometric damper, draft gauge and a squirrel cage blower. Optional features include dual warm air outlet louvers to direct the air and different sized fuel tanks.
