How do I Install Kitchen Cabinets in Post & Beam House?

Post and beam construction began hundreds of years ago and is a popular choice for home builders today. Installing kitchen cabinetry in a post and beam home will require a few extra steps to get it right. Measurements must be exact, and, of course, the proper tools should always be used. Using a custom kitchen would be your best choice for this type of home because this option would include having a professional measure and build cabinets that can allow for the beams. If you choose to go with store purchased cabinets, they will have to be placed on each side of the beam and a blank must be installed to cover the gaps.

Locate the studs where the cabinets will be affixed to the wall. Mark each of

these with a pencil. Use your level to mark the stud above and below where the cabinet will sit to ensure you stay on the stud from top to bottom. Mark a level line horizontally from wall to wall at 53 inches. This is where the bottom of your top cabinets will need to be. The use of a temporary 2-by-4 can be screwed along this line for the top cabinets to rest on while you screw them to the wall.

Install the top cabinets. Start in the corner with your pull cabinet or corner cabinet and work out. As each cabinet is put in place, use the counter sink to drill pilot holes into the face plate to lock each cabinet in place using 2-inch wood screws.

Install a blank the same width as the distance from one cabinet to the other the same way the face plates are screwed together using pilot holes when you encounter a post.

All face plates should be level and flush with each other.

Install the base cabinets. Verify during the install the cabinets are level from side to side and front to back. Use wood shims to level the cabinets as needed.

Screw the level base corner cabinet to the wall using 3-inch wood screws. Secure the other cabinets by the face plates in the same manner as the top cabinets. The face plates should be flush.
