How do I Remove Stains From Vintage Linen?

Vintage linens add charm and history to any home. Unfortunately, older linens are likely to have stains or yellowing due to age. There are remedies to remove damage and preserve the beauty of your vintage linen items. Before trying these remedies, be sure to spot test on a piece of scrap fabric, and never wring out vintage linens, as this might damage their delicate fibers.
  • Water and Sea Salt Soak

    • Soak vintage linen in a gallon of hot water mixed with 1/4 cup sea salt for two days. The linen needs to be fully covered and laid in the sun to dry. If staining is heavy, soak for longer than two days and replace the water as needed. Use a vinegar rinse to rinse once, and rinse again with plain water.

    Oxygen Bleach Soak

    • Soak vintage linen in oxygen bleach according to the directions on the container. Soak at least overnight, longer if stains are dark or stubborn. Rinse, and lay outside during the early morning hours, and let dry.

    Ivory Soap Stain Remover

    • Combine 1 gallon of warm water, 2 tbsp. of Ivory soap, and 1 tbsp. of bleach. Mix and let cool. When it gels, apply to stain and let stand for one day or longer. Rinse thoroughly until stain is removed.
