How to Clean a Colt Agent Revolver

The Colt Agent .38 caliber revolver is a snub-nosed revolver built in the same design as the famous old "Detective Special" of the 1940s and 1950s. The Agent is chambered for the .38 Special round -- a longer and more potent version of the regular .38 round. It has only a 2-inch barrel, making it an ideal backup or concealed-carry weapon. Like all pistols, it is important that you know how to clean and maintain your Agent, as improper maintenance can make the weapon hazardous to fire.

  Pull the cylinder latch -- located on the left side of the Agent just behind and below the cylinder -- rearwards and push the cylinder out the left side of the gun. Remove any rounds that may be loaded in the cylinder and set aside.

  Apply gun solvent to a cloth swatch and use your cleaning rod to run it through the barrel and cylinders of the Agent to pick up any loose dirt or grime.

  Use your copper wire brush to scrub out the inside of the barrel and cylinders to break loose any grime or powder residue. This step is typically only needed if you have recently fired the weapon.

  Repeat step two after using the brush to pick up any grime that may have been knocked loose by the brush.

  Use your toothbrush to clean both the front and rear face of the cylinder as well as the barrel.

  Wipe away all traces of gun solvent using your clean cloth.

  Apply a small amount of gun oil to a cloth swatch then run it through the barrel and cylinders to apply a thin coat of oil. Pass a dry patch through the barrel and cylinders immediately afterwards to remove the coat if you are not planning on storing the weapon.

  Apply a small amount of gun oil to another cloth swatch and lightly moisten all external surfaces, including the area between the hammer and the cylinder.

  Use your clean cloth to dry off the Agent's grip.
