Compare and Shop for Mini Refrigerators

When you think of mini refrigerators, you may think of dorm rooms, but college students are not the only people who use a mini fridge. You might want to compare and shop for a mini refrigerator for your boat, summer home, game room, or guest bedroom.
  • Size

    • Mini refrigerators are available in three standard sizes. Cube refrigerators are the smallest, measuring anywhere from 18 to 21 inches, and weighing less than 40 pounds. Mid-size or compact refrigerators are slightly larger than cubes, at 24 to 28 inches in height. Counter height models are the largest in the group, at roughly 32 to 33 inches in height.

    Function

    • Many mini refrigerators have very small freezer capacity, in some cases, just large enough for one ice cube tray. Most minis do not freeze as well as standard refrigerators, due to their smaller size. As you compare and shop for a mini fridge, you'll want to base your decision, in part, on the inside capacity of the refrigerator, and how cold it will keep your food and beverages.

    Features

    • Mini refrigerators do not have room for many features, but there are a few to consider. Some have adjustable shelving, and some may include shelving inside the door. Counter-height models may include extras like a vegetable crisper, and can be installed as a permanent fixture in a kitchen or game room.

    Considerations

    • Cubes and small mini refrigerators are lighter and portable. Counter models can slide into a kitchen island or provide a place to set your microwave. As you make comparisons, thinking about how the appliance will be used will help you decide what size is best for your needs. If the mini fridge is for a dorm room, check with the school before purchasing, as there may be a size restriction.
