How to Apply for Jobs With the US Border Patrol

The main priority of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, one of the Department of Homeland Security's largest components, is to keep terrorists and illegal weapons out of the United States. The CBP also facilitates trade and travel in and out of the United States. Individuals interested in joining the CBP must go through the federal government's hiring process.

Access the CBP section of the USAJobs website. This website is the main listing location for open positions within the federal government and the CBP. The only way to apply for jobs with the CBP is to comply with the application process and hiring instructions listed on the USAJobs site. Unsolicited applications and resumes are not considered.

Search the open job vacancies on the USAJobs website that match your interest and qualifications. The CBP portion of the website allows applicants to search for position by keyword, series number, occupational series or applicant eligibility.

Select the job vacancy that you wish to apply for by clicking on the title of the position. This action takes you to an informative synopsis of the position including a description of the position, salary information, eligibility requirements and specific application instructions for the position.

Complete the individual instructions for the position that you selected. Many active CBP positions require applicants to register for a written test online and sit for an examination at a later date. If you pass the written test, you move into a pool of eligible applicants who appear for an interview before an oral hearing board. Applicants who successfully move through this portion of the hiring process undergo a medical exam, drug test, fitness test, a background investigation and a polygraph test. The requirements for administrative positions within the CBP are less rigorous.
