- 1
Hold the outer line spool with one hand. With your other hand, use a counterclockwise turning motion to unscrew the bump knob. Once it has been removed, set it aside.
- 2
Remove the inner line reel from the outer spool.
- 3
Remove the inner reel spring from the base of the inner reel. Set the spring aside for now.
- 4
Wipe the inner reel, inner reel spring, shaft and interior of the outer spool to remove any loose dirt or bits of grass.
- 5
Cut a new piece of line from your replacement line spool. It should be approximately 25 feet in length. A bit shorter is fine, but more than 25 feet may prevent the line from dispensing or releasing properly.
- 6
Loop the replacement line into two equal lengths. Insert one end into each of the two holes on the inner reel. Pull the replacement line through evenly, so that you maintain two pieces of equal length.
- 7
Wind the lines in tight even layers onto the inner reel. Wind the line in the direction indicated by the arrow stamped onto the inner reel. Continue winding until about 8 inches of line remain on each individual line.
- 8
Insert the lines into the two holding slots on the edge of the inner reel. Reinsert the inner spring into the base of the inner reel.
- 9
Insert the ends of the line through the eyelets on the outer spool, and slide the inner reel back inside the outer spool. Push the two together.
- 10
Hold the inner reel in place with one hand. Use your other hand to pull on the line ends to release them from the holding slots on the inner reel.
- 11
Reinstall the bump knob by screwing it back into place using a clockwise turning motion. Be sure to tighten it securely. Your string trimmer has been reloaded and you are ready to begin trimming once again.
