How to Apply Plastic Sheeting to Windows for Insulation

Covering windows with plastic sheeting helps keep out cold winter air. By preventing cold air from entering a room, the temperature of the room stays higher, which in turn lowers your heating bill. Both regular and shrink plastic work well on windows. Shrink-wrap windows tend to look more clear than regular plastic sheets. Apply the plastic inside the house, underneath curtains and blinds, using double-sided tape to hold it in place.

Pour 2 to 3 drops of dishwashing soap into a large bowl. Add water until the bowl is half full.

Dip a sponge in the water. Wring out the excess water from the sponge.

Wipe down the window trim or walls where you will apply double-sided tape. Let the area dry.

Place the top of the piece of tape at the top of the trim or wall above the window. Measure a piece of tape long enough to reach just under the edge of the window. Cut the tape. Press the piece of tape into place. Repeat with the other side of the window.

Press a large sheet of plastic onto the tape. Run your finger over the plastic setting on the tape to help it stick. Trim off the extra plastic.
