Non-traditional students face many challenges. However, if you are a single mother going back to school in nursing, you may have many options for financing your education. You may be eligible for new student, nursing, women's, or single mother scholarships, so it's important to research all of the options available.
Nursing-Specific Scholarships

Nursing scholarships can range from $250 to $16,000 a year. Some are federal, while others are grants from non-profit foundations. Most are only limited by year in school. Some of the most lucrative include the ENA (Emergency Nurses Association) Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship and the Chances Scholarship program through Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Many scholarships require attendance at a National League for Nursing (NLN) accredited school.
Single Mom Scholarships

The Pell, Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity and other federal need-based grants can be applied for by filling out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). There are also individual programs in some states; your financial aid advisor should be able to provide you with a list for your state. You can also use NursingScholarships.us as a resource for specific grants by location. Private scholarships are available from organizations like the Jeannette Rankin Foundation, the Association of Nontraditional Students in Higher Education Scholarships, and other organizations that promote education for minorities or victims of abuse.

Unfortunately, there are people who prey on women trying to make a life for themselves. Some organizations, like Raise the Nation, are no longer accredited, and others are simply scams. Make sure to verify any scholarship opportunity by Internet search or at least a phone call.
Before applying, gather your personal information. You will need to validate your identity, the ages of your children and your financial information and job/education history to quickly and easily fill out the applications.
