How to Control Moisture in a Freezer

Freezers, either the stand-alone type or those that come as part of a refrigerator, are for the most part dry cold environments. However, they can from time to time be subject to moisture build-up--and even at low temperatures, if there is too much moisture you run the risk of a lot of frost building up or having mold ]start to grow. Controlling moisture in a freezer can be in done a few different ways.
    • 1

Place a dehumidifier in the room or close to the room where the freezer with the problem is located. If the freezer is a larger chest-type model, such as the type usually found in a basement, having a dehumidifier will not only reduce the moisture in your freezer but will help in reducing the dampness in your basement.

Keep the freezer door is closed when not in use. This is particularly important if you live in a hot, humid climate. Keeping the door is closed will prevent humidity from entering the freezer. Close the door as soon as possible once you've taken out what you need.

    • 3

Replace the freezer door seal gasket--it's the plastic, rectangular seal around your freezer and fridge door. If it's damaged or not providing a good seal, moisture can creep into the freezer.

Organize the food in your refrigerator to reduce the number of times you have to open and close the door.
