Open the simulator editor by going to the "Start" menu and going to "All Programs." Point to "Microsoft Games," then "Train Simulator" and click on "Train Simulator Editors & Tools."

Click on "Activity Editor" in the bottom-right section of the editors and tools window to open the Train Simulator Activity Editor.

Click on the "File" menu at the top of the main editor window and click on "New." Select the route you would like your activity to follow in the "Select a route" window and click the "OK" button. Type in the name of your activity in the "Activity display name" box and click "OK."

Edit the difficulty, duration and display name by entering the proper text in the text boxes, and click the radio buttons corresponding to your choices in the "Activity" properties section. You can also add a description and brief to your activity by clicking the "Edit activity description" and "Edit activity brief" buttons.

Create or edit a pre-made player service in the "Player" properties window by selecting the player service you would like to edit from the drop-down menu, or clicking the "New" button. You can choose how much fuel you would like to start with by moving the slider left or right. You can also change the start time by changing the numbers in the text boxes next to "Start time."

Change the season and weather conditions by clicking on the drop-down menus next to "Season" and "Weather" in the "Conditions and Hazards" properties window. You can change the hazard frequency by dragging the slider left or right next to "Animals" or "People."

Click on the "New" button at the top of the "Action Events" window to create an event along the route. Select the type of action you would like to create in the drop-down menu at the top of the "Action event properties" window and click on it. Click on the spot on the map along the route that you would like to complete this event, if necessary.

Fill in the rest of the event properties in the "Action event properties" window as required and click the "OK" button at the bottom of the screen.

Click on the "File" menu at the top of the screen and select the option that reads "Package Activity." Type in a name next to "filename" and click the "Save" button to save your newly created activity.

There are also various pre-made activities included in the simulator. Activities are scenarios based on situations that can arise while operating trains in real life. You can choose to complete the pre-made activities that come with Microsoft Train Simulator or create your own activities using the activity editor provided.
