How to Get VAT Back From Receipts

If you are traveling and shopping, you should be aware that many countries in the European Union and elsewhere use an alternative to the sales tax in the United States, called VAT (value-added tax). As a traveler, there is a good chance you are not required to pay that tax, but you need to ask for it back through a series of steps, as the VAT is usually included in the price. In addition, each country has a threshold purchase level you need to make at each particular establishment to be eligible. Check with the store when you make the purchase to see if you meet it.

Ask the cashier for a detailed receipt for your purchase, one that shows the amount of the VAT paid, as well as a VAT refund form.

Go to the customs office at the airport before check in. Bring your receipts, VAT return forms and the items you purchased in case you need to show them. If you have visited several countries in the European Union and are headed home, you can apply for a VAT refund for all of your purchases in the various countries at the airport.

Follow the directions of the customs officials, who will direct you in the next step. You may need to go to a second office in the airport, on the other side of check in, to get your refund or finalize your application. If you do not receive a refund immediately, the form will be returned to the store and your credit card credited (or check mailed to you later).
