Traditionally, homecoming was built around the sport of football and was the event that caused students to flock to stores to look for formal wear during the fall. But now, other sports, such as basketball, are having a kind of similar homecoming celebration. This celebration, known as courtwarming, entails typical elements of a homecoming event such as dinner, dance and the nomination of a king and queen. Courtwarming usually has a theme, so students can dress up for the dance in an outfit that goes along with it. If you are in charge of planning a courtwarming, there are several ideas you might want to consider.

    Superhero Theme

    • As popular as superheroes are with the younger crowd, this theme is sure to please. Students should dress up as their favorite superhero for the courtwarming dance. A basic superhero costume is usually very tightfitting and consists of a leotard, tights and a few embellishments. Find a leotard at a dance supply store and use fabric paint to create designs that match the superhero's costume. Sew on a long cape to the back of the collar of the leotard. Add a wide belt and long gloves in the color that matches the superhero's costume. Plastic weapons, such as a sword or a bow, help set the costume off, but ask a school authority if these are OK to use before taking them to school.

    60s Theme

    • Take the students back in time and show them what they missed by choosing a retro courtwarming theme such as reliving the 1960s. There were many different fashions in the '60s, but a hippie theme is a fun choice for students. Popular fashion choices for guys included tie-dyed shirts and torn jeans or bell bottoms with fringed leather vests. Girls can wear layers of long-beaded necklaces, peasant blouses and long skirts or granny dresses. Students can put single braids in their hair and girls can tuck in a flower to symbolize flower power. Flip-flops are another must-have item. Finish the look by adding a daisy or a peace symbol on the clothes or flip flops.

    Pajama Theme

    • If you want a really laid-back theme for the courtwarming that doesn't require much planning, use a pajama theme. Kids can come decked out wearing their favorite pajamas and walk around in slippers. They can face paint glow-in-the-dark stars on their cheeks. Hair can be undone and left natural for both guys and girls. Or add some plastic rollers and some hair nets to add to the fun.
