How to Look Up the Tax Value of a Property

Property tax rates vary with the locale. The information to be used as the starting point, the tax value of a property, is a common baseline. In most cases, finding this value, often called the assessed value, can be done with a search on the web, as this is considered public information. When that is not possible, a call will usually get the process rolling.

Find the name of the county for the property if not known. Do this by looking at The National Association of Counties web page search function. It is common practice for tax values to be maintained under county government.

Search online using the phrase "county name, state, tax record." Another potential phrase is "county name tax assessor" or "county name land record." For example, using the phrase "El Paso County Colorado Tax Assessor," the tax assessor property search site can be found.

Enter the site. Find the correct boxes in which to enter the street name, the property number and directional information. Locate the appropriate submission button, fill in and submit. At this point, there may be additional fields to fill in and another submission button before the actual tax information comes up.

Call and ask how to obtain tax assessment information if no database can be located, by looking up the phone number for the county tax assessor. For example, "El Paso Texas County tax assessor phone number" turns up the county government page with phone information.
