How to Properly Size an Ice Axe

Ice axes are used by mountaineers and ice climbers to aid them in ascending icy slopes. An ice axe has a long handle attached to a head. The head consists of a pointed end, called the pick, and a flat, shovel-like head known as the adze. The shaft length of ice axes is measured in centimeters and usually ranges from 50cm to 75cm.

Consider what type of activity you will be using your ice axe for. If you are an ice climber, you will want an axe measuring less than 60cm. If you will be mountaineering or doing other activities on less than vertical snow and ice, go with an axe between 60 and 75cm. Ice climbing axes will not work for mountaineering, and vice versa.

Find a store that keeps a variety of ice axes stocked. Find an axe suited to your activity that you would like to try out. Choose one you think will fit you. The taller you are, the longer the handle should be.

Hold the top of the ice axe with the spike pointing toward the floor. Stand with your arms hanging by your sides. A properly sized axe should just barely touch the floor when you stand relaxed. Try holding a number of different ice axes hanging down by your side until you find one that is about the right size.
