How to Refill the Toner on an HP 1200

Purchasing a new toner cartridge for the HP LaserJet 1200 printer can be cost-prohibitive. In some cases, just a few toner cartridges can exceed the original price of this now discontinued printer. One solution to this is to refill the toner cartridge.

Locate the indent on the left-hand side of the printer. This is near the top of the printer, if you look from the front. Pull that backward to open the printer. Pull on the handle on the toner cartridge to pull it out of the printer.

Plug your soldering iron into a power outlet to warm it up. Once hot, create a hole in your toner cartridge near the right-hand rear of the cartridge, close to the handle you use to pull the cartridge out of the printer. Touch the soldering iron to the plastic, and wait for it to melt through. Continue to enlarge the hole, making it large enough to pour your toner from the bottle directly into the cartridge.

Place the opening of the toner refill bottle over the hole you just made, and slowly pour toner into the cartridge. Cover the hole completely with electrical or duct tape as soon as you finish filling the cartridge.

Insert the refilled toner cartridge into the printer and close the printer.

Print several pages of paper out. This will help the toner powder balance in the cartridge, and avoid messing up any documents you print later.
