How to Replace the Tensioner Pulley on a 1994 Saturn SC2

A tensioner pulley must be replaced immediately if it shows any signs of damage. Leaving a damaged pulley in place can lead to problems with the drive belt and any engine accessory it powers, eventually leaving you stranded on the side of the road. Replacing the tensioner pulley on a 1994 Saturn SC2 can be done by most novice mechanics in under an hour with a few simple tools.
    • 1

Pull the hood release on the driver's side of the interior to release the hood latch.

    • 2

Raise the hood, remove the hood prop from the retaining clip and place it in the appropriate hole in the hood to support it.

    • 3

Hook up a work light to the hood latch to illuminate the engine compartment.

    • 4

Place a wrench on the tensioner pulley bolt, located in the middle of the tensioner pulley. The tensioner pulley is just under the alternator on the passenger's side of the vehicle.

    • 5

Turn the tensioner pulley bolt counterclockwise with the wrench to release the tension on the belt. Keep turning the bolt counterclockwise until you can remove the bolt and pulley from the tensioner bracket.

    • 6

Place the new pulley onto the tensioner bracket and reinstall the tensioner pulley bolt.

    • 7

Slip the drive belt over the new pulley.

    • 8

Place a wrench on the tensioner pulley bolt and turn it clockwise to tighten it and place tension on the drive belt.

    • 9

Unhook the work light from the hood latch.

    • 10

Remove the hood prop, attach it to its retaining clip and lower the hood.
