Drive Shaft Removal
- 1
Chock the wheels with a brick or piece of wood. Lift the Cherokee with a jack and support it on jack stands.
- 2
Shift the transmission into neutral. Release the parking brake.
- 3
Draw a straight line on the drive shaft yoke to the rear differential yoke with chalk.
- 4
Insert a flat head screwdriver through the drive shaft yoke. Remove the flange bolts from the drive shaft with a wrench. Tape the bearing caps to the spider (the central crosspiece linking the U-joint's two yokes) with duct tape.
- 5
Lower the rear end of the drive shaft manually. Remove the front of the drive shaft from the transmission.
- 6
Wrap a plastic bag over the transmission housing to prevent fluid loss and contamination. Secure the plastic bag with a rubber band.
Universal Joint Removal and Installation
- 1
Remove the snap-rings from the spider using a pair of needle-nose pliers.
- 2
Set the drive shaft yoke in a vise. Place a socket or a piece of pipe with the same inside diameter over one of the bearing caps. Place a socket with a smaller diameter than the cap on the opposite bearing cap.
- 3
Press out the cap with the vise. Stop just before the cap is fully extruded. Use the pliers to work the cap the rest of the way out.
- 4
Move the sockets to the other side. Press the cap out with the vise. Stop just before the cap is fully extruded. Use the pliers to work the cap the rest of the way out.
- 5
Pack the new universal joint bearing with grease. Position the spider in the drive shaft yoke. Partially install the bearing cap then partially install the other bearing cap.
- 6
Align the spider. Press the bearing caps into position. Install the snap-rings with the pliers. Install the grease fitting. Fill the joint with grease.
Drive Shaft Installation
- 1
Remove the plastic bag. Wipe the oil seal clean with a rag. Look for damage or wear to the oil seal.
- 2
Slide the front of the drive shaft into the transmission. Lift the rear of the drive shaft into position. Align the marks on the drive shaft and differential yoke.
- 3
Remove the tape from the bearing caps. Install new straps and bolts with the wrench. Remove the jack stands, lower the vehicle with the jack and remove the wheel chock.
