How to Take My 2005 4Runner Out of 4-Wheel Drive

In various makes and models of vehicles that have four-wheel drive capabilities, there are a number of issues that can crop up from time to time. Not all of these are serious problems, such as when the four-wheel drive of your 2005 4Runner does not disengage after it has been turned on. There are a number of simple solutions to help "jolt" the vehicle back into proper form and disengage the four-wheel drive system, none of which requires a mechanic.

Check the alignment of the front hubs as this can keep the four-wheel drive system on your 4Runner from disengaging properly. Start the vehicle and move it forward slightly to reach an optimal level of alignment. Drive about 6 inches, stop the vehicle and click the disengage button on the four-wheel drive system to disengage it. Repeat if necessary until the system shuts off or proceed to the next step

Shift the vehicle into neutral and press the four-wheel drive button on the 4Runner's dash panel. Shut the vehicle off if it still does not work and repeat the process. Shift the vehicle into park then shut the 4Runner on and off as sometimes the computer sensor can get confused with what is going on and needs to be reset.

Check to see if the four-wheel drive light is still on. Locate the differential locking button on the dashboard (the button showing a wheel diagram of your 4Runner with the rear wheels straight and the front wheels turned) and verify that it is turned off. Drive to a large, empty parking lot and put the 4Runner in reverse. Press the disengage button on the four-wheel drive and drive the vehicle backwards until the system goes back into two-wheel drive.
