How to Use a Nuvi as an External GPS

While most people buy the Garmin Nuvi GPS to use in their vehicles, it also has a special setting that enables it to be used as an external GPS. If you are walking, riding your bike or even rollerblading somewhere, you can change your Garmin GPS settings to enable external use mode.

Turn on your Nuvi GPS and position yourself in an area away from tall structures (e.g., trees, tall buildings). Once the satellite signals are acquired, you can turn on the external use mode.

Go to the "Tools" menu, press "Settings," select "System," choose "Usage Mode," press "Pedestrian" and then select the "OK" button.

Press the "Where to?" button to enter your destination into your Nuvi. You are now using it as an external GPS.
