Last Minute Birthday Gifts for Boyfriends

  • High-Tech

    • Most men love gadgets, so chances are there's one out there with your boyfriend's name on it. If he's a gamer, buy him the latest handheld system. If he loves to drive but hates to ask for directions, get him a talking Global Positioning System, or GPS, unit that he can program to guide him through any country on Earth. If he loves to cook, give him a digital meat thermometer; if he's an athlete, buy him a programmable training unit that looks like a watch but displays and records his heart rate, workout rate and calories burned. Any one of these gifts is readily available at your local department store, sporting goods store or gaming shop.

    Man Stuff

    • There are some gifts that fall into the "these are basic, good presents for any man" category. Buy your boyfriend the biggest Swiss Army Knife that you can find; it doesn't matter if he already has a pocket knife, because more blades equals better to him. If you know that he has a fondness for tools, buy him a big set of good quality wrenches or a power tool he doesn't have yet. One caveat about tools: Some men have a strong brand preference, so snoop around in his garage or call his brother if you don't know whether he's a Craftsman guy or a Snap-on fiend. Don't buy him cheap tools; take a knowledgeable friend with you to the hardware store or ask a salesman if you know nothing about them yourself.

    Food and Drink

    • To a woman, receiving a case of beer and six bags of chips might seem like a cop-out; to a man, it will seem like he's hit the mother lode. Find out his favorite candy, chips, soda, beer, champagne or oysters and then buy him a lot of it. A gift card to his favorite restaurant is another last-minute gift that will be well-received, as is the announcement of the pending delivery of prime steak or lobster, which can be arranged instantly online or over the phone. If you cook or bake and you have a little time, whip up a double batch of your famous cookies and fudge or a crock full of that four-alarm chili he loves so much.
