Types of Green Houses

Greenhouses enable a gardener to cultivate plants from different climates year round by internally controlling the environment. No longer dependent on the local weather, gardeners can enjoy fresh tomatoes year round grown in their greenhouses. Greenhouses come in various sizes, shapes and materials depending on the needs of the gardener and the allotted space. From window boxes to large stand alone greenhouses, there are styles for every budget.

    Size

    • Greenhouses come in different sizes such as small window boxes, small portable boxes, attached greenhouses and stand-alone greenhouse structures. If all the space that is available is a kitchen window, an attached small window box is perfect for growing herbs or plants. Attached greenhouses attach to the house, barn or garage and have a lean-to slanted shape or an even shape. Free standing greenhouses stand alone and can be any shape.

    Building Materials

    • Greenhouses can either be bought ready made, come in build-it-yourself kits, or they can be hand made from scratch. The cost is dependent on the building materials used and the climate of the location. The frame is typically made from wood or pipe material. The frame is covered by either tempered glass, plastic film or fiberglass.

    Accessories

    • The accessories of a greenhouse depend upon the needs of the plants the gardener intends to grow. Watering devices, heating and solar panels, artificial lighting and shade cloths are all necessary for heat, sunlight and humidification control. By manipulating the environment, a gardener can grow just about any plant he desires! The whole system can be automated if desired.
