Give a gift that is practical and sentimental. John Slater/Digital Vision/Getty Images Having a friend move away is not a good feeling. You have shared so much together from first boyfriends to loss of family members. Maybe you want to send him off with a gift that is both practical and sentimental. Maybe you want to gift her with a present that she can use as well as something that she will always remember you by even when you are miles apart. If so, several options are available.
Plant

A gift like this is practical. But it can be sentimental as well. Surprise her with her favorite flower to take on her journey. When she arrives at her destination, she can consider it her first housewarming present. If she is moving to a warmer climate like Florida, buy her a baby potted orange tree. She can plant the tree in her yard and be reminded of you whenever she looks at it. Attach a personal short note like, "This tree will grow and bloom over the years just like our beautiful friendship has." This is a personal gift that is practical and sentimental.
Gift Certificates
-
Gift certificates are practical and can be purchased and used at the store of your choice. Perhaps your friend is moving and needs furniture. Present her with a gift certificate to any home store like Crate & Barrel, or Home Depot, someplace that will help her purchase what she needs to make her new space a comfortable home. If he is moving to a place in the Western United States, like California, give him a gift certificate to a major food chain restaurant. Most certificates can be purchased online and are presented in decorated envelopes. Attach a short note like, "You can take me to dinner when I come visit." It is a simple idea that is made personal.
CD

cd-r image by matteo NATALE from Fotolia.com If she has a long drive to her new home, she may need some tunes to listen to. Purchase a few of her favorite CDs. If you want to go the extra mile, make your own homemade CDs with her favorite traveling music. If she is into 80s pop music, download some Duran Duran and Adam Ant. If the 80s are not his thing and he prefers old-school punk like The Clash, make a compilation CD of their greatest hits. For a little fun, stick in a few of those disco tunes he hates. This way he will definitely remember you no matter where he is.
