Mini DVI Specs

    • Apple has manufactured its computers with several, space-saving output interfaces. In 2008, the Mini DVI interface replaces the Mini VGA port on Apple products, such as the 12-inch PowerBook G4. This compact design allows users to enjoy high definition video from their Mac products that do not have room for a bulkier interface.

    Appearance

    • The Mini DVI socket contains 32 contact points known as pins. These pins are arranged in a rectangular shape with one side open. The socket is not just a scaled down version of the original DVI interface. The female socket corresponds to a mini DVI port on Apple computers, such as the 12-inch PowerBook G4, iMacs, MacBooks and Xservers with Intel hardware, as well as the 2009 Mac mini.

    Video Quality

    • Mini DVI ports and devices transmit data using the Digital Visual Interface specification. This specification is capable of transmitting high definition video data between the source (such as an Apple computer) to a display, including external monitors, projects or compatible televisions. Mini DVI technology can display high definition images up to a resolution of 1920 by 1200 pixels. DVI technology does not transmit high definition audio data; although, the similar HDMI specification transmits both.

    Compatibiity

    • Mini DVI ports on Apple products connect to DVI connectors, including the Apple Mini DVI to VGA Adapter. This offers the ability for the user to use external or multiple monitors with their Apple computer. In addition to this, Apple also manufacturers Mini DVI to S-video adapters and Mini DVI to regular DVI adapters for use with electronics devices that have the traditional DVI interface. Other companies manufacturer Mini DVI to HDMI adapters.
