Don't let the notion of bright colors scare you away from using them to brighten spaces in your home. Bright colors add energy, light and warmth to rooms when you know how to use them. The trick to keeping bright colors from becoming overwhelming is to use a shade that matches your decor. The colors in a room should flow, and once you find the right color, the rest is a breeze.

    Blue and Green

    • Blues are cool colors, and bright or pale shades of blue expand spaces that may feel dark or crowded. The brighter shades of blue will reflect light and luminosity. Look for light shades of blue with a tinge of gray for the best effect. Other options include blue with greenish tints, such as sea foam green, which will energize rooms. If you prefer green, go with lime green or grass green to add energy as well as to brighten spaces.

    Red and Orange

    • Red is bold, upbeat and brightens any room or space. Choose lighter shades of the color, such as tomato or ruby, for the best effect, and avoid the darker shades, like burgundy and brick. You can also opt for lighter shades of orange or coral to brighten up spaces. Apricot has an orange tint without being too overwhelming. Use off-white trim with these colors for a color combination that pops.

    Gold and Yellow

    • The right shades of golden tones, such as a creamy mustard, will intensify rooms. Soft, pale shades of yellow, such as straw or ochre, are pleasing without being jarring. Yellow with hues of green amplify the bright mood of rooms. Pair these colors with white molding for a balanced look.

    White and Brown

    • White is a safe color that makes rooms feel airy and open. White is available in many tones, such as pearl and marshmallow. Look for tones that are tinted with colors that work well with your decor. While brown can be a dark and heavy color, lighter shades of brown can actually brighten rooms. Oatmeal, tan and light shades of beige open up areas and go well with colors and styles of every decor.
